Limited Edition

A predetermined number of prints (or sculptures) produced from a single plate or mold. Once the limit is reached, no closer impressions can be made.

How It Works

An artist decides to create a print run of 50. Each print is numbered (e.g., 1/50, 2/50) and typically signed. This scarcity creates value compared to an "Open Edition" which can be printed indefinitely.

Artist Proofs (A.P.)

Traditionally, these were extra prints for the artist to check quality (usually 10% of the edition size). Today, they are often sold alongside the main edition, sometimes at a premium.

Why It Matters for Collectors

For many, prints are the gateway to collecting. Understanding "editions" is crucial to ensuring you are buying an asset that retains value.

Value Factors

  • Edition Size: Smaller is generally better (an edition of 20 is more "rare" than 500).
  • Numbering: While legally 50/50 is the same as 1/50, some collectors irrationally prize lower numbers.
  • Signature: Always look for a hand-signed element (pencil is preferred for prints as it cannot be printed by a machine).
